Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) – During the Regional Youth Forum on Peace and Security held from October 22 to 24, 2024, Ms. Madeleine James, Permanent Representative for the African Union Sixth Region Global (AU6RG) to the East African Community (EAC), delivered a powerful message emphasizing the critical role of stability in achieving Africa’s development.

The Interconnection of Peace and Prosperity

“Stability in one nation is interconnected with the stability of its neighbors,” Ms. James asserted, highlighting that lasting peace is essential for the continent’s prosperity. She connected this need for stability to the broader goals of Agenda 2063, particularly Aspiration 4, which envisions a peaceful and secure Africa. The stability of the DRC, she noted, is foundational for the Great Lakes region, making it imperative for neighboring countries to support peace initiatives.

Unlocking Economic Opportunities through AFCFTA

Ms. James also spoke to the economic potential unlocked by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA). “AFCFTA provides an unparalleled opportunity for economic growth, but it can only thrive in a stable environment,” she explained. The EAC, she pointed out, plays a pivotal role in advancing regional trade and economic cooperation, underscoring that the stability of its member states is crucial for collective prosperity. “Disruptions in one country can ripple across the entire region, affecting trade and development,” she added.

Empowering Youth and Engaging the African Diaspora

A central theme of her address was the call for greater youth involvement in peacebuilding efforts. “With the majority of Africa’s population being young, it is crucial that governments include them in peace and security decisions,” Ms. James emphasized. She insisted that young people should not only engage in dialogues but actively shape policies. Additionally, she highlighted the importance of the African Diaspora, urging a recognition of their potential as valuable partners in peace and security, in alignment with Aspiration 6 of Agenda 2063, which promotes people-driven development.

Leadership and Collective Action for Peace

Commending leaders such as Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of Tanzania and Chairperson of the Troika of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Ms. James recognized their commitment to facilitating peace talks in the DRC. She called for ongoing collaboration among regional leaders to foster stability and resolve conflicts.

A Vision for a Peaceful and Prosperous Future

In her closing remarks, Ms. James issued a rallying cry for governments, civil society, youth, and the diaspora to unite in building a peaceful and prosperous future for Africa. “Collective action is vital to achieving the aspirations of Agenda 2063,” she concluded, reinforcing the idea that peace is not just a goal but a foundational element for the Africa we envision.
